Preparing for Sedation

The necessary preparation can differ depending on the type of sedation being used:

  • Before receiving laughing gas, it’s best to avoid heavy meals and disclose any medications you’re taking or health conditions you have. You don’t have to fast before your treatment; in most cases, you can drive yourself home afterward.
  • Before receiving oral sedation or IV sedation, be sure to follow our instructions fully. You shouldn’t eat or drink for six to eight hours before your treatment. You should also take the prescribed medication as our team directs and inform us about any medications and health conditions. With oral sedation and IV sedation, you will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.

How Does Dental Sedation Work?

Sedation options are administered differently depending on the type:

  • For laughing gas, a small mask that administers the nitrous oxide is placed over your nose. After a few minutes, you’ll feel the calming, relaxing effects. These effects will quickly wear off when your treatment is over, allowing you to resume your normal activities.
  • For oral sedation, you take a prescribed medication an hour or so before your treatment. This will help you relax without anxiety. You will feel drowsy but remain conscious. Following your treatment, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.
  • For IV sedation, medication is administered into your bloodstream using an IV, usually in your arm or hand. You will feel deep relaxation but still be responsive. Our team will monitor you throughout the process to ensure your safety. For this sedation, a friend or family member will need to drive you home.

FAQ

    • IV sedation effects can last four to eight hours, with some possible grogginess continuing after that timeframe.
  • Am I a good candidate for sedation?

Typically, anyone with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitivity or complex dental needs can benefit from sedation.
